Meet Our Board Members: Jeff Young
“Be brave. Take risks. Nothing can substitute experience.”
That quote from Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho seems to fit Bell Bank board member Jeff Young. Jeff brings more than two decades of leadership experience in the ever-changing and entrepreneurial software and financial systems industries to his role as a Bell Bank board member.
He is president of WEX Health, a healthcare benefit software firm based in West Fargo. The company provides healthcare financial management technology to businesses in a variety of industries.
Before joining WEX in 2014, Jeff helped grow Lighthouse1, a healthcare benefit software company Bell Bank partially owned, which later became Evolution1.
HealthcareBank and Discovery Benefits, both Bell Bank sister companies, were Lighthouse1’s biggest and most important business partners, Jeff says. HealthcareBank manages deposits and investments for consumer-driven healthcare accounts, and Discovery Benefits sets up and administers health savings accounts.
“It’s been a fantastic opportunity to serve the healthcare customers and partners that we have and also grow business with the Bell Bank team,” Jeff says.
WEX acquired Evolution1 in 2014, and Bell sold its portion of the business to WEX.
Prior to his work with Lighthouse1, Jeff was vice president of business applications – U.S. for Microsoft and was responsible for sales, marketing and partner relationships. Before that, he held a number of senior leadership positions at Great Plains Software, including executive vice president of sales, marketing and services and vice president of global product development.
“Having a chance to work with the bank for a number of years, Bell is extremely impressive in how it’s grown, how the company takes care of its employees and how active and supportive it is in the community,” Jeff remarks.
One of the great things about Bell, Jeff says, is the company is not afraid to set high goals, and it goes about achieving them the right way.
“Too often in business today, you see businesses take shortcuts or don’t go the extra mile for their customers. It’s very rewarding to see Bell do as well as it does as a business and for its employees and the community,” Jeff comments. “It’s a very inspiring company, and it’s great to be a part of it.”
Jeff has been a member of Bell’s board since 2012. The experience also helps him in his current position, he says, because he learns a lot from his fellow board members.
“It’s a very strong group of local business leaders who represent a wide and diverse group of businesses,” he says. “It’s a group of people who are very successful but also very humble and grounded in helping the bank continue to grow.”
Jeff was born in California, grew up in Jamestown, N.D., and graduated from Jamestown College (now the University of Jamestown). He lives in West Fargo with his wife, Terri. They have three children: Andy, a minor league baseball player for the Palm Beach Cardinals in Palm Beach, Fla.; Alexis, a junior at the University of Jamestown; and Britany, a senior at Sheyenne High School. Jeff also serves on the West Fargo Baseball board.
