Basics of Medicare Insurance
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for individuals age 65 and older (and others with special exemptions).
Medicare open enrollment is now open through December 7.
There are four main parts to Medicare:

(Part A)
Helps cover:
- Inpatient care in hospitals
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Home health care
Medical
Insurance
(Part B)
Helps cover:
- Services from doctors and other health care providers
- Outpatient care
- Durable medical equipment
- Many preventative services like screenings, shots, vaccines and annual wellness visits
Medicare
Advantage
(Part C)
Medicare Advantage bundles Part A, Part B and usually Part D, and may also cover:
- Vision services
- Hearing services
- Dental services
Prescription Drug Insurance
(Part D)
Helps cover the cost of:
- Prescription drugs
- Many shots and vaccines
There are two main Medicare coverage options:
Original Medicare
Includes both Part A and Part B (with the option to join Part D separately) and covers most, but not all, of the costs for approved health care services and supplies.
Medicare Advantage
May offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover such as vision, hearing and dental services.
