Youth Education: Mystery of Inflation

A child climbs a playground wall using ropes with orange grips, while a smiling woman holds a toddler and a man offers support, under a cheerful atmosphere.

Inflation is a big topic that’s showing up in everyday life. To help kids understand the concept, here are three fun tips for teaching about inflation, plus a downloadable featured activity sheet:

  1. Make It Real.
Compare today’s grocery receipt to one from a few years ago—or ask a grandparent what things cost when they were young. Kids don’t need theory—they need context.
  2. Talk in Their Language.
Skip the percentages. Say: “This LEGO set used to be $40—now it’s $60. That’s why saving matters.”
  3. Make It a Game.
Our new printout lets kids hunt for 1965 prices—like burgers for 50¢—and compare them to today. It’s fun, surprising, and a great money conversation starter.

Featured Activity: Decode the Mystery of Inflation

Kids follow time-traveling cousins on a mission to rescue Grandpa’s dog—while collecting clues about what things cost in 1965. On the way back, they’ll use math to decode a secret message that reveals the meaning of inflation—no boring lectures required! Download the activity sheet below.
